The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has changed the FD rules for Small Finance Banks, and the new guidelines will come into effect from October 1, 2026.

The changes are aimed at making FD investments more transparent and ensuring that every customer gets equal treatment.

From displaying interest rates in advance to introducing uniform rates across branches, the new rules are expected to benefit both new and existing investors.

Why Has RBI Introduced These New Rules?

Small Finance Banks have attracted many customers in recent years by offering attractive FD interest rates.

However, several customers complained that the interest rate shown on the bank’s website was different from the one offered at the branch.

In some cases, different customers were offered different rates for similar deposits.

RBI has introduced these changes to remove such confusion and make the FD process more transparent.

The new rules will help customers compare interest rates easily and make informed investment decisions.

Banks Must Display FD Interest Rates Before Accepting Deposits

Under the new rules, Small Finance Banks must publish the interest rates for all their FD schemes on their official websites before accepting deposits.

This means customers can check the latest rates online before investing.

Banks will also have to accept FDs based on these publicly displayed rates, making the process more transparent and fair.

Bulk Deposit Rates Will Be Updated Every Day

RBI has also introduced a clear rule for bulk deposits.

Banks must publish the applicable bulk deposit interest rates on their websites by 10:00 AM on every working day.

If any revision is required, they can update the rates by 10:10 AM.

This will ensure that large investors receive accurate and up-to-date information before making investment decisions.

Same FD Interest Rate Across All Branches

One of the biggest changes is that a Small Finance Bank cannot offer different interest rates for the same FD scheme at different branches on the same day.

For example, if two customers invest the same amount in the same FD—one in Delhi and the other in Mumbai—they must receive the same interest rate.

This rule has been introduced to ensure equal treatment for all customers.

Banks Can Still Offer Different Rates on Bulk Deposits

RBI has clarified that banks can continue to offer different interest rates on bulk deposits.

However, these rates must be decided according to a pre-approved policy and transparent guidelines.

Banks will no longer be able to offer special rates arbitrarily to select customers.

What Is a Bulk Deposit?

According to RBI rules, a bulk deposit is a term deposit of ₹3 crore or more made with a Scheduled Commercial Bank or a Small Finance Bank.

Such deposits are usually made by companies, trusts, institutional investors, and high-net-worth individuals (HNIs).

How Will Customers Benefit?

The new rules will make FD investments more transparent and customer-friendly.

Here are the key benefits:

Customers can check official FD interest rates before investing.

The same FD interest rate will apply across all branches of a bank.

Banks will not be able to offer arbitrary rates for similar deposits.

Bulk deposit rules will become more transparent.

Comparing FD rates across different Small Finance Banks will become much easier.

Will Regular FD Investors Also Benefit?

Yes. Although some changes focus on bulk deposits, most of the new rules directly benefit regular FD investors.

Customers will now have greater confidence that the interest rate displayed by the bank is the one they will receive.

They also won’t have to worry about another branch of the same bank offering a better rate for the same FD.

Check This Before Opening an FD

If you’re planning to invest in an FD with a Small Finance Bank after October 1, 2026, make sure you first check the bank’s official website for the latest interest rates.

Under the new RBI rules, banks will be required to follow the publicly announced rates.

This will make it easier to compare different banks and choose the FD that offers the best returns for your investment.
