The government is launching a new version of the PAN (Permanent Account Number) card with a QR code to improve the digital experience for taxpayers.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the PAN 2.0 project.
The main goal is to use PAN as the key identifier across all government digital systems. The government will invest Rs 1,435 crore for this project.

The new PAN card with a QR code will be issued free of charge. This upgrade will bring many advantages to taxpayers. Services will become easier to access, processing will be faster,
and the overall quality of services will improve. All taxpayer information will be available in one place, making data safer. The eco-friendly process will also reduce costs.
The new system aligns with the government’s Digital India vision, making PAN a common identifier across various government platforms.
The PAN 2.0 Project Details
This project is an e-governance initiative aimed at transforming how taxpayers register and access services using technology.
It will improve upon the existing PAN/TAN system (PAN 1.0) by integrating more services and verifying PAN details more efficiently. So far, about 78 crore PANs have been issued in India, with 98% of these being for individuals.
What is PAN?
A PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric identity card provided by the Income Tax Department. It is essential for all financial transactions in the country, much like a voter ID is required for voting.
The PAN allows the Income Tax Department to track an individual’s financial activities, making it a crucial identification for anyone involved in financial transactions.
