India has taken a big step toward modernizing international travel by launching the new e-Passport.
Designed to improve security and speed up immigration checks, this digital upgrade promises a smoother experience for Indian travelers.

What Is an e-Passport?
An e-Passport looks almost the same as a regular Indian passport, but with one major difference—there is an electronic chip embedded inside the back cover.
This chip securely stores your personal and biometric information, including your fingerprints, facial data, and digital signature.
Because the data is stored digitally, it becomes harder to duplicate, tamper with, or misuse.
Key Benefits of an e-Passport
The e-Passport offers several important advantages that make travel safer and faster.
First, it enhances security.
The encrypted chip makes identity theft extremely difficult, reducing the chances of fraud or fake passports.
Second, immigration checks become much quicker.
At many airports around the world, e-Passports allow travelers to pass through automated e-gates, cutting down wait times.

As the rollout expands, travelers should check whether their nearest Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra has started issuing e-Passports.
Who Can Apply for an e-Passport?
Any Indian citizen who is eligible for a traditional passport can apply for an e-Passport.
For now, the service is available only at selected Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs).
Applicants should confirm whether their local office offers the facility before submitting an application.
The government plans to expand e-Passport services across the country in phases so both new applicants and renewals can benefit from this upgrade.
How to Apply for an e-Passport
The application process remains the same as applying for a regular passport.
Register on the official Passport Seva portal.
Fill out the online form, pay the required fee, and book an appointment at a PSK or POPSK.
During your appointment, your biometric information—fingerprints and photographs—will be collected.
Once processed, the e-Passport with the embedded chip will be printed and delivered to your registered address.
