The southwest monsoon is moving rapidly across the country. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), by Sunday, the monsoon had reached 12 states
and completely covered Kerala, Karnataka, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram.
At the same time, several parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are witnessing pre-monsoon rainfall. In Rajasthan’s Sriganganagar, rain
and hailstorms were reported on Sunday. In Madhya Pradesh, a strong storm overturned an auto-rickshaw on the Indore-Khandwa highway.
Thunderstorm Damages Three Air India Aircraft in Delhi
Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain also caused disruption at Delhi Airport. Three Air India narrowbody aircraft were damaged after coming into contact with ground support equipment during the storm.
Following the incident, all three aircraft have been grounded for inspection and repairs.
Meanwhile, weather conditions in Delhi-NCR have changed once again. After a brief relief period, temperatures have started rising from Monday
and are expected to touch 45°C in the coming days. The Meteorological Department has warned that heatwave-like conditions could develop next week.
Monsoon Reaches Northeast, More States Likely to Get Rain Soon
This year, the southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 4, three days later than usual. However, it has advanced quickly since then, covering 12 states within just four days.
On Sunday, the monsoon entered the northeastern states of Tripura, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland. A day earlier, it had already reached Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Mizoram, and Manipur.
According to the IMD, many parts of Kerala are likely to receive heavy rainfall between June 7 and June 9. Lakshadweep may also experience heavy rain on June 7 and 8.
Weather officials say the monsoon is expected to continue its rapid progress and could advance further into Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha over the next three to four days without any major obstacles.
