If everything goes as planned, traveling on highways in India will soon become more convenient and cost-effective.
According to multiple media reports, the Government of India is considering introducing annual and lifetime toll passes.
These passes aim to provide hassle-free and affordable travel for frequent highway users. The primary goal is to reduce congestion at toll plazas and offer a cheaper alternative to the current toll payment system.
How Will the Toll Pass Work?
As per a report by the Times of India (TOI), the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is in the final stages of reviewing this proposal. Under this system, highway users will have two new options:
Annual Toll Pass – Available for ₹3,000, this pass will allow unlimited travel on national highways and expressways for one year.
Lifetime Toll Pass – Available for ₹30,000, this pass will be valid for 15 years, eliminating the need to pay tolls repeatedly.
Reports suggest that these passes will be integrated into the existing FASTag system for seamless implementation.
Integration with FASTag System
Since the system will be implemented through FASTag, no additional equipment or major changes will be required.
Currently, frequent highway travelers can only opt for a monthly toll pass, which costs ₹340 per month (₹4,080 per year) but is valid only at a specific toll plaza.
The new passes will remove this restriction, allowing travelers to use all toll roads across the country without interruptions.
Impact on Private Vehicles and Traffic
Currently, private vehicles contribute 26% of total toll revenue and are a significant factor in traffic congestion at toll booths, especially during peak hours.
By introducing annual and lifetime toll passes, the government aims to simplify toll collection, reduce waiting time at tolls,
and offer unlimited travel options to regular highway users. This initiative is expected to provide financial relief and improve the overall travel experience.
Additionally, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is exploring ways to reduce toll charges per kilometer along with launching the new toll pass system.
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari recently stated that the government has completed its research on toll tax concerns and is preparing to implement solutions to address public complaints.
