The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has shared a fresh update on the withdrawal of ₹2,000 notes — and the numbers show the process is almost complete.
As of March 2, 2026, 98.44% of the ₹2,000 notes have been returned to the banking system.
Only ₹5,551 crore worth of notes are still with the public.

Almost All ₹2,000 Notes Are Back
When the RBI announced the withdrawal of ₹2,000 notes on May 19, 2023, there were ₹3.56 lakh crore worth of these notes in circulation.
Fast forward to February 28, 2026 — that amount has dropped sharply to just ₹5,551 crore.
This means nearly all the notes have been returned, marking a major milestone in the withdrawal process.
How Can You Exchange ₹2,000 Notes Now?
Even though bank branches stopped accepting ₹2,000 notes after October 7, 2023, you still have options.
Visit RBI Issue Offices
You can exchange or deposit your ₹2,000 notes at RBI Issue Offices located in 19 cities across India.
Send Through India Post
You can also send your notes via insured post from any post office to an RBI Issue Office.
The amount will be directly credited to your bank account.
So, if you still have the notes, there is no need to panic.
Are ₹2,000 Notes Now Invalid?
No.
The RBI has clearly stated that ₹2,000 notes remain legal tender.
They have not lost their value.
They are being withdrawn from circulation, but they are still valid money.
Cities Where You Can Exchange the Notes
RBI Issue Offices are located in the following cities:
Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
If you live near any of these cities, you can directly visit the RBI office for exchange or deposit.
