Good news for Indian travelers flying through France. The country has removed the requirement for airport transit visas for Indian citizens.
This means Indians no longer need a transit visa if they are just passing through a French airport on their way to another country.
This decision comes after a promise made by French President Emmanuel Macron during his visit to India earlier in 2026.
The French Embassy confirmed that this new rule is effective from April 10, 2026.
Who Will Benefit From This New Rule?
Indian citizens holding ordinary passports can now transit through French airports without needing an Airport Transit Visa.
However, there is one important condition. Travelers must stay inside the international transit zone of the airport during their layover. If they leave this area, normal visa rules will apply.
This change will make international travel easier, faster, and less stressful for many Indians who take connecting flights via France.
Announcement Made Earlier This Year
President Emmanuel Macron had already hinted at this move during his India visit in February 2026.
To make it official, the French government updated an older rule from May 10, 2010. The new decree was published on April 9, 2026, and became effective the very next day.
India Welcomes the Decision
The decision has been welcomed by India. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that Indian travelers flying via France will no longer need a transit visa.
He also added that this step reflects the strong relationship between India and France. Both countries have upgraded their ties to a “Special Global Strategic Partnership.”
This move is expected to boost travel and strengthen connections between people of both nations.

A transit visa is a short-term visa given to travelers who pass through a country while going to another destination.
It is usually required when there is no direct flight, and a traveler has to change planes in another country.
This visa only allows you to stay briefly at the airport and does not permit you to enter or explore the country.
