India Post has announced important changes that will take effect from August 1. For the first time, the Department of Posts has officially defined what qualifies as a “document” and what will be treated as a “parcel.”
The move is expected to make postal services more organized and transparent.
Along with this, India Post has also announced new charges for its 24-hour and 48-hour Speed Post services for both retail and bulk customers.
What Will Be Treated as a Document?
Under the new rules, several commonly mailed items will now fall under the document category and will attract lower postal charges.
These include:
Letters and printed materials
Complimentary items with no resale value
Banking and financial documents such as welcome kits, passbooks, cheque books, debit and credit cards
Government-issued documents like PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, voter ID cards, passports, and driving licences
Non-commercial packets weighing up to 500 grams, including Rakhi envelopes and greeting cards
Any item that does not fall into these categories will be treated as a parcel.
Speed Post Charges for Retail Customers
India Post has not changed the existing retail rates, but it has officially notified the charges under the new document category.
From August 1, the 24-hour Speed Post service will cost between ₹38 and ₹186 per packet, depending on the weight and delivery distance.
For packets weighing up to 50 grams:
Local delivery: ₹38
Delivery anywhere in India: ₹94 (GST extra)
For heavier packets:
51–250 grams: ₹118 to ₹154
251–500 grams: ₹140 to ₹186
New Rates for Bulk Customers
India Post has also announced separate pricing for wholesale or bulk customers.
For the 24-hour Speed Post service, charges will range from ₹38 to ₹100 per packet.
For the 48-hour Speed Post service, bulk customers will pay between ₹48 and ₹72 per packet.
Retail customers using the 48-hour service will pay between ₹61 and ₹121, depending on the packet’s weight and the delivery distance.
At present, both the 24-hour and 48-hour Speed Post services are available only in six cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
