HDFC Bank has introduced a two-day work-from-home arrangement for employees working in its Business and Corporate Enabling Functions, according to sources.
The hybrid work setup has started immediately and will remain in place for the next 30 days.
After that, the bank is expected to review the arrangement before taking a further decision.
The move marks a limited return of hybrid work at a time when most companies have been asking employees to return to offices full-time.
Which Employees Will Get Work-From-Home?
The new arrangement applies only to selected non-customer-facing teams.
Employees working at bank branches and customer service operations will continue working from office as usual.
Banking services across the country are not expected to face any disruption.
According to sources, the work-from-home policy currently applies to:
Business functions
Corporate enabling teams
Non-customer-facing departments
The bank has not yet made an official public announcement regarding the decision.
Why HDFC Bank Introduced Hybrid Work Again
The development comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens and organisations to reduce unnecessary travel and save fuel wherever possible.
The Prime Minister encouraged measures such as:
Work-from-home arrangements
Online meetings
Reduced travel
Fuel-saving practices
The appeal comes amid rising global crude oil prices and growing concerns over fuel import costs due to tensions in West Asia.
Hybrid Work Returns to the Discussion
During and after the pandemic, many companies adopted hybrid work models.
However, in recent years, most firms — including banks — gradually shifted employees back to offices.
HDFC Bank’s latest move suggests some organisations may again be considering flexible work arrangements, at least temporarily.
The decision is currently being treated as a short-term trial and will reportedly be reviewed after one month.
Delhi Government Also Introduced Similar Measures
The Centre has clarified that there is no mandatory work-from-home order for private companies.
However, businesses have been encouraged to voluntarily consider fuel-saving measures.
Recently, the Delhi government also introduced a two-day work-from-home arrangement for government offices and advised private firms to explore similar options.
At the same time, employee groups like NITES have been demanding more formal hybrid work policies as companies continue debating the future of workplace flexibility in India.
