EMI bounce can happen when a lender is unable to collect the scheduled instalment from a borrower’s bank account. Low balance, an incorrect or expired auto-debit mandate, or a technical problem can cause the payment to fail.

A failed EMI may lead to charges from the lender, depending on the loan agreement and applicable rules. Borrowers should therefore check their account balance and repayment mandate before the due date.

What Is an EMI Bounce?

An EMI bounce occurs when an automatic debit for a scheduled loan instalment fails. Insufficient funds are a common reason, but payment failures can also happen because of problems with a NACH or ECS mandate or a technical issue.

The charges for a failed payment are not uniform across all lenders or loan products. Borrowers should check the loan agreement, Key Fact Statement and applicable schedule of charges to understand what may be payable.

The Reserve Bank of India has said penal charges on loans should be reasonable and clearly disclosed to customers. Such charges are intended to promote credit discipline and should not be treated simply as an additional source of revenue.

EMI Bounce Rules and Credit Reporting

An EMI bounce does not automatically mean that every borrower gets a standard seven-day grace period before the missed payment can be reported.

The applicable reporting process can depend on the type of credit facility and the lender’s regulatory requirements.

RBI rules also require lenders to follow applicable procedures for credit information reporting.

Credit information is now exchanged more frequently, with regulated entities required to submit credit information to credit information companies on a fortnightly basis under the current framework.

This means borrowers should not assume that a failed auto-debit can always be corrected within a fixed grace period.

If an EMI fails because of a genuine technical problem, the borrower should contact the lender promptly and keep records of the failed transaction and subsequent payment.

How EMI Bounce Can Affect Your Credit Score

EMI bounce can affect your credit score if the missed repayment becomes a reported delinquency.

The effect is not identical for every borrower and depends on factors such as repayment history, the nature of the account and how the lender reports the payment status.

A single failed auto-debit does not necessarily have the same impact as a prolonged or repeated repayment default.

However, repeated missed payments can make a borrower’s credit history less favourable and may create difficulties when applying for future credit.

Borrowers should therefore avoid waiting if an EMI has failed. Paying the outstanding amount as quickly as possible and contacting the lender can help clarify the account status and any applicable charges.

What Borrowers Should Do After a Failed EMI

If an auto-debit fails, the borrower should first check whether sufficient money was available in the linked bank account. The next step is to verify the NACH or ECS mandate and contact the lender if the payment failure appears to be technical.

Borrowers should also ask the lender whether any bounce or penal charge has been applied and how the missed payment has been recorded. Keeping payment receipts, bank statements and communication with the lender can be useful if the failure occurred because of a technical error.

The safest approach is to resolve a failed EMI quickly rather than allowing the missed payment to remain outstanding. Regular and timely repayment is important for maintaining a healthy credit history.
