A PAN card is one of the most important financial documents in India.
It is needed for several activities, such as opening a bank account, filing an Income Tax Return (ITR), and making certain high-value financial transactions.
Earlier, getting a PAN card meant filling out forms, paying a fee and waiting for the card to arrive by post.
But things have become much easier with the digital Instant e-PAN facility.
The Income Tax Department allows eligible individuals to get an e-PAN online, free of cost, without visiting any office.
Who Can Apply for Instant e-PAN?
Before applying, make sure you meet these conditions:
You must have a valid 12-digit Aadhaar number.
Your mobile number must be linked to Aadhaar for OTP verification.
You should not already have a PAN.
You need access to DigiLocker for KYC and date-of-birth verification.
You must be an adult at the time of applying.
If you meet these requirements, you can apply for your e-PAN from your smartphone or computer.
How to Get an e-PAN Online
The application process is simple and can be completed from home.
Step 1: Visit the Income Tax Department’s official e-filing portal.
Step 2: On the homepage, find the ‘Instant e-PAN’ option under the ‘Quick Links’ section.
Step 3: Click on ‘Get New e-PAN’.
Step 4: Enter your Aadhaar number, tick the declaration box and click ‘Continue’.
Step 5: You will receive a 6-digit OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Enter the OTP to continue.
Step 6: You will then be redirected to DigiLocker. Your date of birth and KYC details will be verified through the documents available there.
You may need to allow documents such as your 10th-class marksheet or birth certificate to be shared for verification.
Step 7: If your email address is linked to Aadhaar, you can also verify it.
However, this step is not mandatory.
Step 8: Your details, including your name, date of birth and photograph, will appear on the screen.
Check the information carefully and submit the application.
After successful submission, an Acknowledgement ID will be generated.
Keep this ID safe so you can use it for future reference.
Is e-PAN Valid Like a Physical PAN Card?
Yes. An e-PAN is equally valid as a physical PAN card and can be used for financial and tax-related purposes.
The best part is that the Instant e-PAN service is completely free.
You do not have to pay any application fee to generate your e-PAN online.
So, if you don’t have a PAN yet and meet the eligibility requirements, you can get one digitally without the need to visit an office or wait for weeks for a physical card.
