The Delhi government is planning to introduce new safety rules that could make certain fire protection measures mandatory in homes.
Smoke Detectors and Fire Extinguishers May Become Mandatory
To reduce the number of fire accidents in the city, authorities are considering stricter safety regulations for residential buildings.
Under the proposed rules, every new home may be required to install two important safety devices:
Smoke Detector
Fire Extinguisher
The rule is expected to apply not only to apartments and housing societies but also to independent houses. The aim is to improve early fire detection and help residents respond quickly during emergencies.
Government Reviewing Fire Safety Proposal
Officials from the Home Department said that a proposal submitted by the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) is currently under review.
According to officials, making smoke detectors mandatory could significantly reduce the loss of life and property caused by fires. The proposal is expected to be sent to the Cabinet for approval soon.
The Delhi Fire Service handles around 20,000 fire incidents every year. These incidents reportedly lead to nearly 250 to 300 deaths annually, highlighting the need for stronger safety measures.
Important Fire Safety Tips for Homeowners
The government has also highlighted several precautions that residents should follow to make their homes safer:
Get the electrical system checked if you notice frequent circuit trips or flickering lights.
Install safety devices such as circuit breakers.
Properly protect wiring joints and avoid using temporary insulation tape.
Keep electrical appliances away from water.
Charge lithium batteries only in open and well-ventilated areas.
Never use elevators during a fire emergency.
Regularly inspect old wiring and electricity meters and replace them if necessary.
Keep stairways, exits, and emergency routes free from obstacles.
Role of Resident Welfare Associations
The government has also advised Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to coordinate with nearby fire stations.
RWAs should inform local fire departments about gates that remain open during the night. This can help fire engines reach residential areas faster during emergencies and reduce response time.
