Banks must Check Vehicle Numbers for FASTag

The National Highways Authority of India has taken a strict step to fix issues in the FASTag system.

It has asked all banks issuing FASTags to immediately verify vehicle registration numbers (VRNs) linked to FASTags.

This decision comes after several complaints where the number captured by FASTag scanners did not match the actual vehicle number plate.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, such mismatches can create serious problems.

They can:

Affect toll collection accuracy

Lead to revenue loss for the government

Allow rule violations under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988

In simple terms, incorrect FASTag details can make it easier for some vehicles to avoid paying tolls properly.

To fix this issue, banks have been told to:

Verify all existing FASTag details

Identify tags linked with wrong vehicle numbers

Blacklist invalid FASTags as per rules

This means if your FASTag has incorrect details, it could stop working until fixed.

This step is also important for upcoming toll technologies like Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF).

In this system:

Vehicles won’t need to stop at toll plazas

Toll will be deducted automatically

Penalties (like e-notices) will depend on accurate vehicle data

So, correct FASTag information will be essential for smooth travel in the future.

Many of these mismatches are linked to older FASTags issued before integration with the VAHAN database.

Verification systems were weaker

More manual processes were used

Errors in vehicle data were more common

Update details if needed through your bank
