In today’s digital age, the government is tightening rules to reduce cybercrime. However, scammers are also creating new tricks to target people.
Recently, many people have received fake messages pretending to be from the post office. These messages try to trap users by asking them to update their address details.
Fake Parcel Delivery Messages
Scammers posing as India Post claim that your parcel has reached the warehouse but could not be delivered because the address is incomplete.
They include a link and ask you to update your address within 48 hours, warning that the parcel will otherwise be returned.
This is where the fraud starts. If someone clicks on the link, scammers can steal personal information or even withdraw money from the person’s bank account.
Government Warning and Safety Tips
The government’s fact-checking agency, PIB Fact Check, has clarified that the post office never sends messages containing such links.
This means all such messages are completely fake and meant to deceive people. So, always think carefully before clicking on any unknown link.
The telecom regulator, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, has also introduced rules to control fraudulent messages. Genuine messages from verified senders now carry special identification marks.
Government messages have a distinct tag, and bank or service-related messages follow a prescribed format. If a message does not have such identification, it should be treated as suspicious.
To stay safe, never click on suspicious links in SMS, email, or WhatsApp messages. Avoid answering calls from unknown numbers, and report such incidents on official platforms.
