The Government of India is taking another major step to boost the Digital India Mission. Starting August 2025, all post offices across the country will start accepting digital payments.
This means customers can now pay using UPI, QR codes, and other online methods at the post office.
Until now, most post offices could not offer digital payment options because their accounts were not connected to the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). But this is about to change.
Why Weren’t Digital Payments Available Earlier?
Post offices lacked the necessary technical setup to support digital payments. Customers could only pay using cash or cards.
Although there was an attempt to use static QR codes at some sales counters, technical issues and complaints led to the plan being dropped.
What’s Changing Now?
A new digital system has been developed under the government’s ‘IT 2.0’ project. This system supports QR code-based payments and will be rolled out nationwide from August 2025.
A successful trial was already conducted in the Karnataka circle, specifically in Mysore and Bagalkot post offices, where QR code payment was used for mail booking.
