Amid the ongoing farmers’ protest, a Parliamentary Committee has recommended the government increase the amount given to farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Yojana.
The suggestion is to raise the current limit from Rs 6000 per year to Rs 12000 per year.
This recommendation was submitted by the Standing Committee, led by Charanjit Singh Channi, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for the Ministry of Agriculture.
Potential Increase in PM Kisan Samman Nidhi
On December 17, 2024, Charanjit Singh Channi presented the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare’s first Demand for Grants in the Lok Sabha.
The Standing Committee has urged that the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi amount be doubled. This would mean increasing the annual assistance from Rs 6000 to Rs 12000 for farmers.
This is not the first time farmers have asked for an increase in the assistance. In past years, farmer representatives have made similar requests to the Finance Minister during pre-budget meetings.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the budget for 2025-26 on February 1, 2025.
There is speculation that the government may consider announcing this increase, following the Parliamentary Committee’s recommendation.
Overview of PM Kisan Samman Yojana
The PM Kisan Samman Yojana was launched in 2019, providing Rs 6000 annually to small and medium farmers in three installments.
The money is transferred directly to the farmers’ bank accounts. So far, Rs 3.45 lakh crore has been transferred to farmers’ accounts in 18 installments, benefiting many under this scheme.
