Banks in several cities across India will remain closed on Friday, September 4, 2026, due to Janmashtami.
But there is an important catch. Banks will not be closed across the entire country. The holiday depends on the state and banking centre.
Banks Will Be Closed in These Cities
According to the RBI holiday calendar, bank branches will remain closed on September 4 in several major cities.
These include:
Ahmedabad
Aizawl
Bhopal
Chandigarh
Chennai
Dehradun
Gangtok
Hyderabad
Jaipur
Kanpur
Kolkata
Lucknow
Patna
Raipur
Shimla
Shillong
Srinagar
Thiruvananthapuram
Vijayawada
The holiday applies to banking centres in several states and regions, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Chandigarh, among others.
If you need to submit documents, deposit a cheque, access a locker or complete any other branch-related work, it is better to check with your local branch before visiting.
Banks Will Remain Open in These Places
The Janmashtami holiday does not apply everywhere.
Bank branches will continue to operate in places where the festival is not listed as an official bank holiday.
These include Mumbai and Nagpur in Maharashtra, Bengaluru in Karnataka, Delhi, Goa and Kerala.
So, customers in these areas may be able to carry out their regular branch work as usual.
UPI and Online Banking Will Continue
A bank holiday does not mean that all banking services will stop.
Customers can still use UPI, mobile banking, internet banking and online fund transfers.
ATM services such as cash withdrawals and deposits will also generally remain available.
However, services that require a physical branch visit will have to wait until the branch reopens.
Why Are Banks Closed on September 4?
The holiday is being observed because of Janmashtami, which will be celebrated on September 4 this year.
Janmashtami marks the birth of Lord Krishna. Devotees traditionally observe fasts, visit temples and take part in prayers and celebrations, especially around midnight.
The festival is associated with the belief that good ultimately triumphs over evil.
For bank customers, the key point is simple: check your local branch’s holiday status before stepping out, while digital banking services can continue to be used.
